No where in the world will you find the sweet delights, which are available in India. Traditionally sweets are associated with festivals and religious ceremonies. Some of the sweets serve excellent dessert and have become quite popular through out the world. Most of the Indian sweets have Khoya or cottage cheese as one of their main ingredient. In the North India sweets are mostly khoya based whereas in the East India most of the sweets are cheese based.
Lets take a look at the some of the famous khoya and cottage cheese based sweets.
Burfi is one of the most famous sweet made out of khoya. It as many variants such as

Burfi is made from khoya sugar and additional ingredients. Mostly burfi is square or rectangular in shape. You will see it garnished with silver and gold foils. Dry fruits are also used to garnish burfi. Plain burfi is simplest of all the burfis. You may find cardamom in it and it will be garnished wit silver foil.
Chocolate burfi has a chocolate flavor added to it. There may be layer of chocolate over a layer of plain burfi.
Fruit burfi come in many variants. Different are used for flavor. Mango, pineapple and anjeer (fig) are common fruits used for the flavor in the fruit burfi. These burfi are more popular in central India. Fruit burfi is garnished with silver foil and dry fruits.
Coconut burfi uses grated dry coconut in its preparation. Some of its variants are prepared without khoya. Malai burfi uses thick layer on top of milk known as malai along with khoya. Malai makes this type of burfi extra soft. Pista burfi use pistachio along with khoya as its main ingredient. It gives the burfi green look and unique pistachio flavor. This type of burfi is garnished with silver foil. Almond burfi uses almond for flavor whereas stuffed burfi use fillings of variety of flavored and fragrant goodies.
Gulab jamun is another sweet made of khoya and other ingredients. They come in dark (almost black) and light (sunny brown) shades. Their size can be large or small and their shape can be spherical to oblong. They are soft to eat.
Peda is another popular sweet made out of khoya. It is very popular in North India. It has long self life and used heavily in religious ceremonies. It may be white or brown in color. If saffron is used it will look yellow in color.
Sweets made out of cottage cheese are soft and juicy and delightful in their own way. Some of the common one are
- Rasmadhuri
- Dilkhush
- Indrani
- Sandesh
- Malai roll
